biography
Matthew_MurchisonMatthew Murchison is widely considered to be one of the world’s euphonium and tuba players. He currently holds the position of principal solo euphonium with the River City Brass Band in Pittsburgh, PA. Matthew is the founder of Mainspring, a unique and flexible ensemble made up of euphonium/tuba, flute, piano, bass, and percussion, which fuses elements of folk, world, jazz, and classical music with an inventive instrumentation to create an exciting new sound.

Matthew began performing as a guest soloist while in high school and has played solo performances throughout the country with a variety of groups from brass bands to orchestras. He has been pleased to be able to perform with groups such as the Pittsburgh Symphony, Brass Band of Battle Creek, and the Dallas Wind Symphony. His solo performances with the River City Brass Band have been broadcast across the country through WQED Pittsburgh, where Matthew has been featured on “Performance in Pittsburgh.” Also while in high school, Matthew performed at an elderly care facility and during his performance of Bride of the Waves, was asked by a mean old lady to “STOP THAT!!”

Matthew has most recently been a guest artist/clinician at the International Tuba/Euphonium Conference, US Army Band Tuba/Euphonium Conference, the Northeast Regional Tuba/Euphonium Conference, Western Michigan University, University of Kansas, SUNY Potsdam, as well as numerous schools across the country (and is pleased to announce that he was never asked to “STOP THAT!!”). Matthew has been a Yamaha Young Performing Artist, a semi-finalist for the Concert Artists Guild International Competition, and winner of the Tuesday Musical Club scholarship and the Pittsburgh Concert Society competition. Matthew's other competition successes include winning both the Artist and Student Divisions of the Leonard Falcone International Euphonium Competition, as well as the International Tuba/Euphonium Conference Young Artist Competition.

Cimarron Music Press publishes Matthew’s original compositions for euphonium, including Drunken Pirate Tale, Blue Green Day, and Six Character Pieces. Matthew released his first solo CD entitled “Everyone But Me” in 2003 on the Mulholland Records and Music label. He holds degrees from the University of North Texas (B.M.) and Carnegie Mellon University (M.M.).

Matthew Murchison is a Yamaha Performing Artist performing on the YEP-842S.
